• The Lanes and Street Art of Brighton

The last part of our day we explored the Lanes and found the amazing street art of Brighton. The Lanes are small streets with adorable shops, that seem to go on for miles. The maze of streets had a unique store behind every turn. For more information on Brighton, click here.

  • We Saw a Damien Hirst

We ran into a Damien Hirst sculpture on our way to Borough Market. ‘Charity’ is a massive 22-foot bronze sculpture based on the collection boxes common in the ’60s. It sits in front of the Gherkin and beside the beautiful St. Helen’s Church. The piece is part of the Sculpture in the City initiative which “features contemporary works from leading artists, set amongst London’s iconic architectural landmarks.” London continues to surprise me. It is so cool to see famous works of art up close throughout the city. For more information on the Damien Hirst ‘Charity’ sculpture,  click here.

  • Art and Graffiti – Portland’s Art District

The art and graffiti in Portland’s Art District is outstanding. There are large pieces scaling the length of a building, to overlapping graffiti, to paintings hanging outside stores. Some of the art uses paint, but others use objects to add texture to the pieces. The mermaid piece has old CD’s that make up her sparkling tail. One student even used an alley for their thesis, trying to make every inch of Portland beautiful. They allow people to interact with the pieces in the alley, and decide what they would like to see in their city. The art district is stunning, and walking the ten blocks was one of my favourite…

  • Battle of the Brush S5E1

I have been working Battle of the Brush on and off for two years now. This incredible event, created by Golden Brush Art and held at Heritage Hall, featured five teams of artists creating a work of art in 80 minutes. The theme for the first episode of season 5 was Beats on Canvas, and the works were diverse and beautiful. Here are some photos from the first half of the event:

  • Battle of the Brush Grand Finale Part Two!

I am thrilled to be working with the team at Golden Brush Art. Every year they hold a live art painting competition called Battle of the Brush and their Grand Finale did not disappoint. The theme was Fairy Tales, and while all stayed within the realm of Disney movies, the paintings were distinct and beautiful.

  • Giants

The largest public art featured in Vancouver is the Giants by Brazilian twins Os Gemeos. They took over the concrete silos on Granville Island and created these incredible ‘giants.’ The work is beautiful from afar but close up the detail is insane. I can’t wait to see it when they finish!

  • Jelly Beans

Giant jelly beans are the latest public art installations in Vancouver. They sit along the seawall and are fully interactive. I watched a guy put his dog on top of one so he could take a picture of it, which is, I’m sure, exactly what the artist was expecting.
